Cool news story on our local news station today, WTOP about a study that just came out. It was an extensive study, and it proves the nutritional value of organic food.

    contents below…

THE biggest study into organic food has found that it is more
nutritious than ordinary produce and may help to lengthen people’s
    lives.

The evidence from the £12m four-year project will end years of debate
and is likely to overturn government advice that eating organic food
is no more than a lifestyle choice.

The study found that organic fruit and vegetables contained as much as
40% more antioxidants, which scientists believe can cut the risk of
cancer and heart disease, Britain’s biggest killers. They also had
higher levels of beneficial minerals such as iron and zinc.

Professor Carlo Leifert, the co-ordinator of the European Union-funded
project, said the differences were so marked that organic produce
would help to increase the nutrient intake of people not eating the
recommended five portions a day of fruit and vegetables. “If you have
just 20% more antioxidants and you can’t get your kids to do five a
day, then you might just be okay with four a day,” he said.

That’s why the mainstream food corporations are fighting so hard to change the definition of organic. Like the Horizon and Aurora labeling their items as organic, even though the are in blatant violation.

  3. Greg Says:

yeah, I agree. I think that there has been greater oversight recently, and that not all farms in the group had been in violation, but it is still pretty severe in some cases.

Also, fyi, we wrote Horizon and received the following reply…

    • HO supports “frost to frost” pasturing of all our animals. In MD, this means we had our cows in pasture 235 days last year, far more than the 120 proposed.
    • All our calves are born to organic cows and raised organic from birth. They are never fed “replacers” like this article claims.
    • Yes, we do sell to Wal-Mart, as does OV. However, Wal-mart and MOMs have the exact same pricing structure (I will discuss this more Thurs).
    • Our cows are never chained, period.
    • Absolutely none of our milk comes from feedlot dairies. Over 80% of HO milk supply comes from family farms averaging 87 cows. The other 20% comes from farms owned by our company, which meet or exceed all organic standards (I will bring the results from the last USDA audit).
    • Silk does not source any soybeans from China. None.
