Capturing the Sun in Frederick

Watch out Frederick, there’s a new market in town. MOMs will be opening it’s fifth store this Spring on Buckeystown Pike. Energy conservation is important to MOMs, which is why we chose to have 20 huge skylights installed throughout the store to lower our energy consumption, reduce our carbon footprint and filter in as much of the nutrient giving natural light that we could. (Not to mention all of the energy efficient equipment that we’re having installed.)

picture courtesy of HUVCOEach skylight, measuring 5′ x 6′, captures sunlight in the dome mounted on the roof, and reflects the light through a series of mirrors down a shaft and into the store’s aisle ways and back offices. The best part about it is that the skylight has been created in such a way that as long as there is day light, no matter the angle in the sky, the skylights can still capture that light and reflect it down. (Of course, the light will be the most “intense” at noon when it is straight overhead.) Do you want to learn more? Visit www.huvco.com for more information.

I lived in College Park for 21 years and I was very excited when MOM’s came to my neighborhood. Since we’ve to Emmitsburg moved I had to put up with the high prices from the Common Market. We do hope you are opening very soon.

Yeah, it seems a lot of people are really sick of the common market, I used to love the old location but they’ve changed. A friend of mine used to work there and he told me how all the old folks were fired. It was really sad how they worried about image rather then the old people who cared. They don’t even educate their employees about environmentalism or organic food. I guess they cared more about making money then keeping their old “hippies” there.

Well, Mom I hope youre better then the CM

The Common Market is a Community Owned Market. The prices may be higher, but it’s technically non-profit. The money goes back into the community, and into educational services they provide for the customers. As a long time shopper, I havn’t seen a change. The old store may have been cozier, but the new one is more inviting so more of the community can go and shop there. Yes, there is room in town for both stores. Some customers just want to save money. That’s cool, but while our community turns into the next big city, and while global warming continues to ravage the world, you can find me at my local co-op.

I was disappointed yesterday, went to MOM in Frederick to see how it was but produce was not looking very good or plentiful and some of the produce prices higher than expected. Also store doesn’t seem to have many employees and also seems very empty compared to Common Market which is where I usually shop and will probably stick with as produce is the main ingredient on my shopping list :(

While I have to say that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I must respectively disagree with the comments above.

I like the layout of the Frederick Store, and there is more parking than anyone could know what to do with. Turnover was bad in some ways, but the people working there have now been there a long time. Lastly, I think the produce looks absolutely amazing. Have you even been in the store in the last couple of months? Honestly?

I’m really not trying to get involved, but I find comments such as these curious when there is a double post that has the exact same message but with different names listed.

Honesty and constructive criticism are always welcomed….
